I think it might be interesting to discuss some of the common confrontations that grab our attention. An excellent example is the current case in Washington State of the atheists who posted a sign next to a nativity scene in the legislative building. Bill O’Reilly notwithstanding, most people will agree that they have every right to do so. But the sign did go a bit further than some atheists would prefer; it explicitly denigrated religion. This presents atheists with an excellent debatable topic: is it better to take the high road and confine ourselves to a positive message, or is it better to take the in-your-face route and confront theists directly?

I think most atheists are non-confrontational, many (sadly) even to the point of being unannounced…fear of social ostracism, lack of strong
convictions, and over-valuation of “politeness” being major culprits…the
old saw about never talking about politics or religion still working its
quiet, questionable magic.
Personally, I feel substantially threatened by the religious majority and
tend to choose the latter in my Flight or Fight moments. No cracking of
skulls of course but clear verbal outbursts signaling my minority views.
Today as a priest approached my wife and I in a super-market aisle, I
turned to my forgiving wife and said in a voice he most surely heard:
Oh, no, a f*cking priest! Whatever slim chances humanity might have
are grounded on Reason–not silent acquiescence in the face of hateful
superstition and ignorance. I say SPEAK UP audibly and often!
